Myths and Facts – Let’s Bust Some Tyre Myths

Facts Over Fiction – Let’s Bust Some Tyre Myths

If you repeat outright nonsense often enough, even the brightest bulbs in the chandelier will begin to think it’s the truth. When it comes to tyres though, let’s stick with the actual truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, because your safety (and our sanity) depends on it.

Myth:    As long as there’s tread on a tyre, it doesn’t matter how old the tyre is…
Truth:    Trust us it matters. Rubber perishes with age and exposure to the elements. Even a tyre that has never been driven can degrade and become unsafe. Check old tyres carefully for hairline cracks or bring them to us for a free inspection.

Myth:    The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) inflates your tyres…
Truth:    Hang on, we’re still laughing… Okay, NO! TPMS can’t inflate a tyre, only indicate when a tyre’s pressure has dropped below a safe level, but if you’re an inventor, there’s something to work on.

Myth:    Nitrogen can make your tyres explode…
Truth:    Not even close. Nitrogen is a non-flammable, inert gas and unlike oxygen, does not support combustion. What nitrogen does do for your tyres, is to make them run cooler and last longer.
